Closing a Chapter

This is gonna be a personal posting, so if you are here to read something about software development solely, stop now and rather check the news.

Exactly one year ago, I blogged about my goals in terms of running, for this year:

What are my goals for 2008? Well, I'm planning to slowly increase my distance to run a marathon next year. It's not gonna be easy! Haile Gebrselassie once said: "It's the king of the distance!". My first step will be to get used to 20km, after that I'll jump to 30km and then we'll see :-). I'm definitely going to take part in the Badische Meile again, although just for fun, I won't practise for it. I'll run the LBS Halbmarathon in September and I hope after that I'll be ready to run the Berlin Marathon 2008.

Since Haile Gebrselassie is one of the most inspiring athletes of our time, I sticked to my plans the way I laid them out last December and ran the Berlin Marathon 2008. I'll quickly highlight the milestones of going from 21k to 42k.

My first run this year was the Badische Meile, which was quite hard. It's only 8.8 km, but since I started training for a longer distance, my ability to run really fast, kind of disappeared over time. With 42:01 minutes my timing was still reasonable. However I couldn't beat my last year's time of 39:06 minutes.

The second run I participated in was a 10k run hosted by the local energy company "Stadtwerke". It was a great run, especially because it was the first time my wife was at the finish line waiting for me. With 52:23 minutes I was not nearly close to my last year's time of 45:09. The reason is not that I wasn't able to, but simply because my training schedule said not to and believe me, sticking to the plan works out, as I'll show you in a minute.

The final preparation run was the LBS Half Marathon in Karlsruhe, which took place exactly one week before Berlin. To that point I had run close to 700 km in less than 10 weeks. It was a brutal, time consuming but amazing experience to get my body literally "up to speed". For the half marathon, my training schedule suggested to have an easy 21k run and that's what I did. However, I couldn't resist to really test my potential and did a sprint in the last 2k to cross the finish line after 1 hour and 56 minutes. To give you an idea of "how slow" I went, my last year's time was 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Day 0 took place in Berlin this year on a sunny Sunday morning with about 35.912 other runners among them the world record marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie. I was really excited and I couldn't wait for it to begin. I was in the second wave, which started 15 minutes after the pro runners. It was an amazing feeling to start with thousands of other people. The run was blast at least the first 30-35k! There were so many people at the side cheering and making noise that I completely forgot that I was running sometimes. After 2 hours, 3 minutes and 59 seconds a new world record was set, which gave me another push. Unfortunately, I had a slight stomach ache all through the run and it got quite apparent at around 30k. Due to that I couldn't drink that much and eating anything wasn't possible. At around 36k I was really tired and exhausted, but I pulled through and finished after 3 hours and 48 minutes. That's 5:24 minutes/km, which I am really proud of.

Running a marathon was an amazing experience and with that goal reached, I'm gonna close the chapter on running for me. I'm still gonna run and I probably always will, maybe I'll compete in another marathon some day, but for now I'm happy with what I've reached.

Running Review

A little more than a year ago I started blogging about running, in this post I'd like to review the past year and outline my goals for 2008.

One of the highlights was taking part in the Badische Meile, which is a local run here in Karlsruhe with a distance of 8.88km. It was my first run ever and it was a great feeling to participate. I invested a lot of time in practising for it, so the results were reasonable!

The biggest thing for me in 2007, in terms of running, was running the LBS Halbmarathon on 16th of September. My preperation included running 400km and getting to know the difference that 5km can make.

KSC Schlossparklauf 2007

Last Sunday I took part in the "KSC Schlossparklauf 2007", which is a 10k run (actually 9.9 km) conducted by the local sports club. The weather was horrible and so was my performance.

I made the 10k in 46:06 minutes, which is okay, considering that I haven't been running that much lately. That made me 187th out of 745. But I finished the 10k of the preparation run for the half marathon in only 45:09. Well, I could blame it on the weather. It was only 5°C and I after a couple of km I couldn't breath properly anymore, which lead to really bad stitches and I couldn't get rid of them for the entire run.

Considering all the circumstances I should be happy about my performance, but somehow it feels like a setback.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon - Day Zero

Today was day zero! The LBS Halbmarathon with 21 km were ahead of me this morning at 09:10am.

Okay so before I say anything let me just tell you that the weather was brilliant today! It was sunny and warm, which leads me to the first mistake of my day. I was wearing my long sleeved running shirt, which was too hot in the sun. Fortunately I decided to run in shorts, so no problems down there.

The starting grid was divided into 4 block A-D. Fast runners which estimated, that their time would be around 1:30h started in block A and from there it went all the way to runners who thought they won't hit the 2:00h in block D. So this leads me to the second mistake, which I did way back when I signed up for this thing. I clearly underestimated myself and chose block D.

At 09:10am after block A-C started, it was my turn and though a little nervous, I hit it up right from the beginning. I was feeling good and after a couple of km I knew I could push my limits today. That's when it started to get really annoying. I had to overtake runner after runner, just because I was not confident enough back then to assign myself to a better starting block. I had to run on sidewalks, grass strips and train tracks to get passed.

I was running with my ipod, which measured the distance quite accurate and gave me some info about my average pace. I didn't have any problems with my legs or feed until towards the end, just my groin was stinging from time to time. Unfortunately due to my long sleeved jersey I was feeling dizzy from time to time, since it was just too hot. With some cold water I got over that too and made my way to the finish line after 1 hour 40 minutes and 27.

I was really surprised about this timing! I think it could have been even better if I had assigned myself to block A or B. I had starting number 2382, which is not a prime number either, by the way. My average pace was 4:45minutes/km which is 12.6 km/h. My average heart rate, and that's quite interesting, was 183 and that's only 94%! My ipod recorder over 35 preparation runs which is about 400km. Below are the stats for the half marathon:

The track was great! There were a lot of people watching and cheering, which I didn't expect at all! It was a really amazing experience and maybe I'll be able to run a marathon in the future.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

Next Sunday is day 0 again and I'm not in a good shape. I mean I prepared myself fairly good, I trained hard, but unfortunately right now I'm having a cold. It's not sever, but it'll be a major drawback next Sunday, especially when it's cold.

I know what I'm talking about, cause on Thursday was the 10k run of the local energy and water supply company. It's called "24. Volkslauf der Stadtwerke Karlsruhe". I was participating, but my cold was killing me after 2k. I was not able to breath in through my nose anymore, as I'm usually doing so I bet I sounded like a horse breathing in and out through my mouth. Overall the run was a little chaotic, at least for a first timer. There were no km marks the first 5k, which made me spend all my energy in first couple of km. After about 6k I was so done. As usually, I'm also going to rant about the weather: it was cold, rainy and windy! I promise that's all I'm gonna say here.

To be honest, I don't know how I made that 20k in 1 hour and 45 minutes the other week, cause the 10k were really exhausting and even next day I still felt the impact, especially on my knees. Before the race I had set my target to 50 minutes and I was very happy that I made it in 45:09 with an average heart rate of 188 (96%).

So this week I'm gonna do more running, I guess 3 short runs until Sunday. I hope my cold will disappear, so that I can keep my targeted time. Next Sunday I'll know, cross your fingers for me!

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

Last week was really cool and somehow I was surprised by how much I can increase performance if I scratch my limits. Below is a graph of my first 20k run:

You can see that I was able to keep my pace steady over 20k and towards the end I even increased it a little. As mentioned above, I was surprised myself that I'm able to push my limits this far. My farthest and fastest run so far was 16k in 1 hour and 23 minutes with an average heart rate of 168. That's about 5.18 m/km. I was able to scale my pace and performance to 20k. My average heart rate was 166 with a max of 191 which is about 98%...as I said I scratched the limits.

After the run I could hardly lift my legs. The next day I was already feeling better and I only felt slightly sore around my knees. I'm looking forward to the 21k and I hope I can it around 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

Getting past this week was quite hard and painful. I can feel the last weeks and the kilometers I ran in my legs. To make things worse, I have the same infection I had a couple of months ago, again. Fortunately it's not as bad as it was back then, but on Wednesday I wasn't able to run, cause my groin was hurting.

To show you my past few weeks, I added this little graph where you can see the development of distance over time:

Yesterday I received my registration confirmation for the half marathon. It's down to 3 weeks now and coming Wednesday I'm going to tackle 20k for the first time. Overall I'm planning to do 8 more prep runs which is about 100k. My legs will be busy the next 3 weeks, that's for sure.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

"... Get through this and you are ready ..."
That's what my running software polarpersonaltrainer.com says, and I hope it's right.

Like last week, I ran 18.7k yesterday and I made it in exactly the same time, 1 hour and 52 minutes. I even decreased my average heart rate a little to 143. If you look at the graph below, you can see that my pace was almost steady. The coolest thing was that, although my legs were tired and I could feel the kilometers in my knees, I felt like going on and on.

Due to time issues I can only run twice next week. I'll do a relaxing jog on Monday and a pretty challenging interval training on Wednesday. On Saturday in one week I'm going to attack the 20k. I guess, well actually I hope, I'll be able to scale up the 6 minutes/km to the 20 kilometer level. Only after that I know that I'm ready.

It's a great feeling to be able to run this distance and I'm glad that I stuck to the workout plan, although it was tough sometimes. I'm confident that I can get passed the 21k in less than two hours, but making it in 1 hour and 50 minutes is another thing.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

One month until the LBS Halbmarathon that I'm participating in and I'm really looking forward. So far I did 24 runs to prepare myself and I still have a lot more to come.

I really want to run the 21 km in 1 hour and 50 minutes. I know that's a very ambitious goal, so I'm also satisfied if I can make it in less than 2 hours.

My problem is that in the next 4 weeks there's a lot of stuff coming up. I won't be able to keep my steady workout plan, which is not fabulous, but I'm gonna deal with it somehow.

This week I tackled the 18 km and I was quite surprised, that I almost had no problems running it. My average heart rate was 144 and it only took me 1 hour and 52 minutes. Towards the end of the run, my legs got heavy and I could feel the impact of the past kilometers on my knee joints. Today, the day after, I almost feel nothing. My thighs are a little sore, but other than that I don't have any problems.

There is a formula to calculate your estimated result for 21 km by multiplying your time for 10 km with 2.333. Using that formula, I haven't reached my goal yet. My best 10k according to my ipod was 55:44 minutes, so that would be about 130 minutes for 21 km.

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

This week was very lazy. I only did two easy runs. A 9km jog on Monday and a 12km run on Saturday. I guess I needed a little break from the past couple of weeks, which were rather exhausting.

The 12k yesterday was fun! The weather was brilliant and I was in a good condition. My average heart rate was 141, which I think is really okay since there was no sign of exhaustion after the run.

Next week I plan to tackle 18k, which I've never ran before. I hope I can manage to run it in 2 hours and an average heart rate of 145. The clock is ticking, only 8 weeks left...

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

This week I increased my distance again to 36 km, following the pattern of the last couple of months, as you can see in the picture below. That will change in the next couple of weeks, especially next week will be a little more relaxing.

The longest run this week was 16k, which I've been running a lot of times before. It was a solid run, no problems whatsoever, but compared to last week the graph looks kinda weird.

You can see that the 14k graph is much more smoother than the 16k. Actually I don't have any explanation for that. The increase at the end of the 16k run is due to a sprint I did, but the rest of the variations are mystery to me.

Overall I'm glad that my performance becomes steadier each week. I don't have any physical problems, except for my knees, which are sometimes hurting a little bit.

July 22, 2007

Weekly Update: Half Marathon

This week I went for three runs again. Compared to last week I increased the distance by almost 10k to 33 km.

On Monday I went for a 10km run, nothing exciting, except for the weather. It was freaking hot, about 30°C. My average heart rate was 148 (~76%), which was a little bit too high. I blame it on the heat.

Wednesday was interval training. As you can see below I got the graph was I was asking for last week. My average heart rate was 147 (~75), which is quite reasonable for an interval training. It was not really challenging and I can't wait to increase speed and intensity.

On Saturday I went for 14k, which was the longest run in months. As you can see from the graph below it was a steady run. My average heart rate was 135 (~69%), which is really good. It took me 1 hour and 32 minutes, considering my heart rate there's plenty room for improvement.

56 days left until the half marathon and I think I'm on a good way to reach my goal of running the 21km in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

July 15, 2007

Steady Week

I went for three runs this week which equals about 24 km. The most interesting one was on Saturday, where I did some interval training. I tried to keep my heart rate in zone1, which is about 50-60% of my your max. heart rate, for about 3 minutes. Then I go up to zone3(70-80%) for 2 minutes. I repeated those intervals for about 6-7 times and I was really exhausted afterwards, which could have also been due to the 30°C+ outside. The main challenge was slowing my heart rate from zone3 down to zone1 after an interval. It was no problem in the beginning, but towards the end it was nearly impossible for me to go below 65%.

Since the interval training screws the stats, I won't post them this week. Unfortunately the ipod stats are not fine grained enough to see any peaks during my interval run. You can only see a steady graph, which is kinda disappointing, cause I bet I cover more ground when I run faster. It would be helpful to see the peaks.

Pain

This must have been painful!

I'm done

The past couple of weeks have been really hard to take for me, in terms of pace. I told myself to start slowly, build up my stamina for the 21km step by step. Well it didn't work out for me. Yesterday I just had to speed things up a little and give all I had towards the end of the run.

Unfortunately increasing my paces screwed the stats, but you cares, right? Next week I'll behave, I promise...

Beginning workout...

Last week was the first time since the Badische Meile, that I had a chance to do my full-blown workout. I did two 5k runs and a 10k yesterday. Next week is gonna be a little more.

Below you can see the numbers for last week. They are not that fabulous, I always took longer than planned and my heart rate was always higher.

name | time in zone (last week) | time targeted in zone
Zone1 | 00:00:31 (00:01:06) | 00:60:00
