WWDC10

It was my first WWDC this year and I'm blown away in any aspect! In order to not sound like an Apple fan boy, I'll highlight 3 aspects, which every conference has and compare them to my previous developer conference experiences.

The speakers were all Apple engineers. They knew how to present and almost all of them were very entertaining and fun to listen to. Most important of all - they knew what they were talking about! This is something no conference I've ever been to can compete with - not even the Spring Source conferences! They were close, but mostly featured some pretty bad talks from none Spring Source consultants, which kind of ruined the experience!

This is one aspect that makes the conference worth attending. I could simply go up to the Core Animations guy and ask him why the stuff is not working as I expect it to. The best thing was, I got and answer that actually solved my problem!

Another aspect is the choice of topics and the quality of the presentations! Everything kind of fits in nicely to the whole App theme. You could listen to talks on Interface Design, followed by an in depth session on Core Animation and finish off with listening to the latest innovations on the new iPhone 4. The quality of each talk was amazing! This is the first conference ever, where I wasn't close to dozing off once! Every session was interesting and inspiring, although they sometimes overlapped in terms of content!

To be fair, I'm kind of new to the iPhone platform, so if everything was interesting for me. I don't know how that holds true for fellow developers working on iPhone Apps for a couple of years. Other conferences I attended had quality talks, too - no doubt! Devoxx, e.g. always had great talks, but there was mostly one or two a day and the rest was mostly boring.

Third and last is the organizational aspect of the conference. It's amazing how Apple manages to keep 5000 developers under control. The food, although not extensive, was very good. Soft drinks all through the day, as well as breakfast and lunch. Another thing that I was blown away is the Wifi. Apple managed to provide a fairly stable internet connection for 5000 developers with probably more than 10000 devices. It didn't always work, as you could see in Steve's keynote, but most of the time it was stable and fast.

Even though I had to travel almost a day, going back and forth to San Francisco and the conference tickets are super expensive, it's definitely worth it. So WWDC11, here I come!

springOne 2009 recap

Last week I was at springOne 2009 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Unfortunately the city left a bigger impression than the conference. There were a lot of people from SpringSource and quite a few interesting sessions, however I didn't get into the spring feeling that I was hoping for.

The most outstanding announcement for me was something called "Spring Roo". According to Ben Alex, it's

...a sophisticated round-tripping code generator that makes it quicker and easier than you've ever imagined to create and evolve Spring applications

You can leverage it to create applications with technologies like Spring, JPA and Spring MVC, using a shell-based approach with tab completion, hints and great default behavior. A big part of the opening keynote was dedicated to Spring Roo, where Ben live coded a simple web-based voting application. You can already download an alpha release and check it out.

Overall the keynotes were the most valuable sessions for me. Most of the others had a rather introductory character and were quite basic, which I think should not be the focus of such a conference. I'm a little disappointed, but nevertheless, I hope next year will be better.

SpringOne 2009

Next week, starting on the 27th of April there's gonna be SpringOne 2009. That's 3 days straight and full blown intensive Spring!

Unlike the last 2 years, the conference is not going to be held in Antwerp, Belgium - instead it'll take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I think it's a nice change. I've never been to Amsterdam before and I even added a couple of days to my trip to explore the city with my wife.

Looking at the first day, there's a bunch of really interesting sessions like "Performance Tuning for Apache Tomcat", "New Features in Spring 3.0" or "Extreme Productivity in Application Development".

I'm really excited to feel some Spring spirit again...

Devoxx 2008 Coming

I'm excited to go to Devoxx 2008 (formerly known as Javapolis) again next week. Last year was a blast! I met a lot of nice people, which I'm looking forward to seeing again this year.

The line up for the conference looks pretty good. Among other Brian Goetz, Alex Buckley and the JavaPosse are going to be there. The topics vary widely from session about core Java to talks about methodologies - everything is covered.

If you can't go, make sure to subscribe to this page for aggregates blog coverage.

SpringOne 2008 coming

SpringOne 2008 is coming next week and taking place in Antwerp, Belgium again. I was there last year and I can only recommend conferences held by the BeJug. They are usually well organized and you get the chance to talk to a lot of fellow developers.

I checked out the conference schedule and unlike last year, there is a lot more Spring stuff covered. All the sessions are packed with topics on the different parts of the Spring Portfolio. A lot of talks are covering OSGi and the recently announced Spring Application Platform. Those are exactly the topics I'm interested in, because we use some of them on my current project. Last year there were a lot of general sessions, e.g. Eric Evans was speaking on Domain Driven Design.

There is one thing, that never seems to change though: the sessions I'm interested in are always taking place at the exact same time.

Back from SpringOne

The last 3 days I spent in Antwerp, Belgium attending SpringOne 2007. It was a great conference, all about Java and the Spring Framework. I added a lot of new stuff to my list of things I wanna check out like, Coherence, BEA's WebLogic 10 and Compass as well as Spring Batch, OSGi and SCA.

At the moment I'm working on a summary of the conference for the Java User Group Karlsruhe, which I'll probably post here too. Until then, some impressions of the conference:

Home sweet home

Well... not really! I'm back in Germany and I must say I already miss Singapore and my folks over there!

The biggest difference between Germany and Singapore is noise! It is so quite here, the only thing I can here are birds singing. In Singapore, no matter where you go, you'll here cars or music. The noise is incredible and it's one of the biggest advantages of Germany. Another thing that really bugged me was the mass of people. They are everywhere and anytime! Even at about 2 am in the morning there are still a lot of people on the road, whereas here I'm looking out of my window and I can't see a single soul. But nevertheless I love Singapore for it's people, food and weather.

I have a lot to catch up with: emails to answer, bills to pay and news to read.

History of Singapore

You probably won't find anything about the "Battle of Bukit Chandu" in a tourist guide, so I'm glad that I have people here in Singapore, that put a lot of effort into bringing the country and it's history closer to me.

The Battle of Bukit Chandu was one of many, taking place when the Japanese invaded Singapore during World War II. However this battle is special to the Malay, cause they fought with their bare hands until the very end and suffered a lot of casualties.

If you want to know more about the history of Singapore, I highly recommend visiting Changi Prison Museum and the place where the battle of Bukit Chandu took place.

Birdy Birdy Birdy

According to my planning I wanted to go to the Jurong Bird Park already two weeks ago. Unfortunately plans don't always work out the way they are supposed to. So yesterday Sutini and I went to watch birdies and it was kinda cool. Sutini took a lot of pics that I'm gonna upload asap.

Yesterday was also Vesak a public holiday for the Buddhist community here in Singapore. They are celebrating the birthday of Buddha. A lot of them, however, celebrated that birthday in Jurong Birdpark. It was so crowded in the little park, that I sometimes felt pity for the little birdies. So try not to go there on the weekends or public holidays.

Night Safari

If you are in Singapore I strongly suggest that you go on a Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo! Sutini and I were there yesterday and it was amazing, despite the fact that it was really hot. It takes some time to get there, so you should consider that when doing your planning. We were kinda late, so we missed one of the shows. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures of the animals with your flash light turned on, so I only took a couple of pics. I'm gonna upload them sometime this week.

Finally

I found a place to upload the first stack of the picture, I took the past couple of days. There's more to follow...

Did you happen to know...

...that the smallest coin of Singapore's currency is 5 cent? No? Me neither, until I checked my receipt when I bought water at a supermarket. It says "CHANGE: $3.94" followed by "ROUNDED TO: $3.90". How strange is that? Well from a business perspective it is freaking cool! But from my perspective it sucks! I'm being cheated all the time!

Running in Singapore

Yesterday I took a short run along Singapore River and man was it hot! I totally underestimated the heat and the weather. I was completely beat after only 6 km. In addition to that I couldn't measure my heart rate, cause my watch doesn't work anymore. I don't know how that happened.

Since I didn't know where to run, I simply started at an MRT station. I then saw soldiers of the Singapore army having some kind of training run, so I thought I just follow them. We had some kind of Germany vs. Singapore competition going on there. I don't wanna brag or anything, but I guess Germany won :-)

Finally Arrived

After a 14 hours flight, with an unplanned stop in Bangkok, I finally arrived in Singapore. It's my second day here and I'm at Vivo City, where Sutini works. It's a real hassle for me to get used to this keyboard layout, but I'll try my best.

Surprisingly I can take the heat here quite well! I'm still sweating, but it's okay. Yesterday Sutini and I took a bum boat ride along the Singapore river. It was really nice and I took a lot of pictures (which need to be uploaded sometimes). Unfortunately it started to rain in the afternoon, so we got pretty wet.

I have to admit, the hotel I'm staying at is a mess, literally! I wouldn't suggest it to anyone! Well, I will get through the 17 days. I'm trying to spend as less time as possible at the hotel!

Prepping my trip to Singapore

Today is all about packing, researching and getting ready for my trip to Singapore. I almost finished my planning over at Yahoo's trip planner. Since my last blog entry about it, I added destinations to Bangkok and changed a couple of places in Singapore.

This will be my last blog post before I leave, so next time I'll be blogging from Singapore.

Trip to Singapore

Next Tuesday I'll fly off to Singapore and I'm still pondering on what to do there. I started planning my trip using Yahoo's Trip Planner, which is not perfect, but quite handy.

I added a couple of things I'd like to do, for instance I definitely wanna go to Sentosa for swimming and I also wanna Night Safari in the Singapore Zoo. Furthermore there's Great Singapore Sale, which means shopping, shopping, shopping :-) It's like "Winterschlussverkauf" but without winter.

Anyways, I'm also planning to spend a day or two in Bangkok. If you have any tips for me, any suggestions what to do in Singapore or Bangkok, post a comment or send me an email.
